Fall is a season of change and an excellent time to step back and review our gardens. As gardens mature, plants grow and change; the light exposure might change. At the same time, our tastes may change and our lives change. Editing becomes our most important tool to keep up with and anticipate change.

Remember that the limitations of your site need not stop you from trying something new. Containers are an excellent opportunity. Use them to fill holes in the garden, to try experimental plants, or to try a plant with special needs such as the water hogs or the zonal denials.

Fall is the best planting time; the soil is still warm enough to encourage quick healthy root development. So make room for some new plants to give your garden a new, fresh look next spring.
